Many roads to take Some to joy, some to heart-ache
Sept 2015
Debra's face went pale when her son told her the news. The Navy? That was the last place she wanted her son to go. So much for keeping him out. It was clear he had made up his mind. Usually Debra wasn't one to stop her kids from following what they felt was right, but this was different. She felt the anger boil up. Of all the branches Debbie hated most it was the Navy. "Trent Michael Oxford!" her tone suggested that she was chastising him. Debbie had never been one to yell at their children. She could be firm with them and a strong disciplinary figure but never did she yell. Only this time she was yelling his name. Her voice hardened and toned down. The tone of disdain still evident in her voice. "I forbid it" she cut at him.
"You can't tell me what I can and cannot do. I am 18 and I choose to serve my country" he tried not to get angry at his mother. He had been expecting this, but it was hard. He and her had very differing opinions on the subject.
"You might as well have told me you are committing suicide Trent I see no difference" she hurled back. Debra was upset and angry. Closing her eyes she took a deep breathe before she did anything stupid.
Trent wanted to reach out to his mom but he knew she was angry at him and it would only make matters worse. Where was his dad or uncle's when he needed them? This hadn't exactly been the best time to drop the news. "It's not suicide.. It's a risk yes but one I am gladly willing to take" he knew yelling back wouldn't help any but there was frustration in his voice. Maybe he should have told his dad first?
Debbie threw her empty plastic cup in the sink as hard as she could. Watching it bounce around she fired more words in her son's direction. "The Navy almost claimed the life of your father and grandfather, and now you want to follow? Get off the stupid pills Trent. The Oxfords and Brighton's have sacrificed enough for this country. I will not lose my son" she fumed. She didn't even add in the fact that Bobby was laying his life on the line for the military and was deployed. She was watching it destroy her sister. In a way that would have been just rubbing raw wounds and even for Deb that would have been a low blow. Her Brighton fiery side was showing. The red hair the sister had been infamous for was clear in her attitude. Even though Debbie was a blonde now by choice it didn't gain her any immunity from her redheaded personality.
"Maman, vous ne perdez pas un fils . Je ne suis pas renier la famille"1 he tried using French. He knew sometimes it could calm her down. While the two had a mutual respect as any mother and son would, he was not his father and he couldn't work miracles calming his mother down.
"S'il vous plaît ne faites pas cela Trent . Cette famille a donné à ses cotisations"2 she got quiet but it was only a temporary calm. She turned her voice back into English and the words were bitter sounding even as they left her tongue. "Had you no thought about others when you made this decision to throw your life away that gives nothing back but heartache" she hissed. With that she tried walking back into the living room but she was followed by her son.
"You don't have to like my decision nor do you have to support it. This is my life and I will with it what I wish to do" he replied.
"Have you told your father?" she whispered. The whisper sounded bitter, disappointed hurt. There was no changing her son's mind she could see it.
"No" he replied watching his mother move to the window. Debra stared out the window and tried to calm down. Trent still chose not to approach her. While she was calm now, he knew her better than that. His mother was still defiantly angry and still liable to strike at any moment.
1. Mom, you are not losing a son. I am not disowning the family 2. Please don't do this Trent. This family has given its dues

He opened the door after a exhausting day to hear voices and not in the friendly tone. With Trent's car outside, Oxford knew his son was visiting. Last they spoke, Trent had been asking advice on which University to attend. By the sound of today's voices, he arrived in the middle of verbal world war three. And who knew over what it was this time. When it came to their son, he could always take wild guesses. A headache had already been forming in his head when he left Navy Office and he was sure he would end up with a migraine soon enough.
Making his way to the kitchen after hanging the blazer, he looked at the two, who seemed to be in a glaring match, "I'm sure Matt can hear you two all that way to Cali. Just what the hell is going on here?" He heard them when he had unlocking the front door, but not the words spoke. And rubbed his forehead.

Many roads to take Some to joy, some to heart-ache
Debra heard her husband's voice. "Your son has decided to join the Navy." her words came out bitterly. They weren't directed at her husband, just the Navy in general. The woman sighed closing her eyes trying to calm down still.
"Just because she hates the Navy.. doesn't mean she should keep me from going into the Navy." he tried to plead his case to his father. Wait he hadn't told him about that.
Debbie was clearly done arguing the subject. She had already blared her head off at her son and well Simon already knew how she felt about it so it wasn't really necessary to beat the dead horse so to speak. The blonde took a few deep breathes. Biting her lip and her tongue. Everything Debra was feeling right now didn't even come close.
Her family had given their life to the Military, and some had paid the ultimate price for it. On home soil of all places. Simon was here and everyday she as thankful for that. After his medical incident; her loathing had already grown. Bobby's last injury had been the nail in the coffin. No Debbie would not lose a son, she would do everything she could to protect him.

Didn't Trent and he already talked about this? Either his memory was faulty or his was trying to remember a conversation that never took place. His mother had the same reaction as Debra was having. He knew there were going to be more emotions that would run it's course. He noted the bitterness that dripped with the words. His son? He tired not smiling at that. Of course he would turn into his son when the boy did stuff that Debra disapproved off. Joining the Navy was on the top of the list.
When Trent spoke, Simon shot him a look, "She has a very good reason to dislike them," The Veteran of the Navy spoke as he leaned on the bench, "If she doesn't I will. All your Grandfathers and uncles have done enough serving to last few generations. While I don't approve of Ry and Liam following Matt, but that's your Uncle's call. However, I will not have my son doing the same."
"But...but..." Trent, "They have already accepted me."
Simon tilted his head, "Do I look like I care. Your grandmothers will blow gasket, all three of them." His mother, Aunt Sarah and his mother-in-law.

Many roads to take Some to joy, some to heart-ache
Oh Debbie was fairly certain that Trent and Simon already had this conversation, or the look on Simon's face wouldn't say it all. Debra only calmed down because she knew being angry would only make things worse. Right she was bitter at the Navy and the last thing she wanted to lose was a son. Debra took a breathe and then looked at the ground and back up again.
She was about to speak when Simon spoke for her, and much more colloquially then she could. Debra was actually quite thankful for that. "I will be calling in a favor in the morning Trent and don't you dare think of trying to go around us on this" she stated flatly. Debra had a lot of pull with high ranking naval personnel herself and this time not afraid to use it.
Debbie leaned on the wall far calmer than she had been before. Simon being around her did that to her. Calmed her to simmer in her anger rather than explode like Jamison was so good at. Eventually Debbie came and sat down on the couch near to Simon and tried to think on her words next. Deb quiet and interjecting on occasion was a sign she was calming down to think rather than act irrationally. "I am sorry Trent I cannot support this decision" she stated firmly.

Trent paled at his parents words, his father was refusing to even care. This was a family tradition to follow into Navy or other armed forces. His great-grand father form his father side had been in the Navy, three of his grandfathers were in Armed Forces, hell, all his uncles were either in Army, Air Force, Navy or Coast Guards. Given his two of his cousins were in Navy, he was not going to be left behind. He was sure Brandon, Colin, and baby Mike would be going Armed Forces. When his mother spoke, he shook his head. "You can't do that," he protested, as he moved in front his mother, "Please don't."
Turning he looked at his father, "It's only the academy for now. Who knows, I might hate, I might like. But please let me have a shot at this. I don't want to regret it years from now that I might have lost a chance to follow what is family tradition. If I don't make the cut, I don't make it. At least I will be happy knowing I tried."
Simon sighed, some days he hated that his kid would use logic on him. But he knew a lost chance was just that. He didn't want his son to look back and see what he could have become, only if given a chance. His own mother had blown gasket when he applied for Naval Academy. He had only made it through due his father's and uncle's support. Now it was all on his wife. Simon knew he had been in the same spot as his son, with very same reasons. Exhaling he sat on the arm of the couch.

Debra glared at her son. "I can" she stated. Debra was not going to give in. Hearing her son attempt at using Simon logic was amusing, but he didn't quite have the same touch. "The Academy isn't something you can CHOOSE to leave! You are NOT going!" she sounded a lot like her younger sister right now when it came to the anger seeping from her. This was how Debra got when she was livid with things. Especially the military. The military and especially the navy had done it's damage to the family. Trent was larger than Debra but she was still his mother. "Sit down" she hashed out.
"This family has LOST enough to the military" she added. Simon sighing didn't help. He was just going to sit there and not put his foot down? The family was usually much easier going than this... but no. Debra wasn't going to budge. She left the room and went into the bedroom. The door slammed behind her. She had a few calls to make.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, she tried to decide if she was going to make a phone call to her dad first or her brother. Fred would probably be the best choice right now. He had the most influence and understood where Debbie stood in regards to the military. Plus Fred always knew exactly what to say to make her feel better. She grabbed the phone off the reciever and started dialing.

He wanted to argue but knew better than to make his mother more madder then she already was. His father was not coming to his defense, Trent already knew that. On the other hand the teen was sure his father had the same argument with his own mother. When his mother told him to set the bot obeyed. "I didn't say in the middle of it," he mumbled to himself. He was also well aware of how much his family had given to the Armed Forces. But the family tradition went years back.
Simon winced as the door was slammed behind. He knew when his was this upset there was going to be work to get her to calm down. Getting to his feet he walked over to his son, patted the boy' shoulder, "I'm not happy both this choice you are making. I surely hope that you have given it a lot of thought. Keep in mind that everything can and will likely to take a back seat to military. It's a heavy price Trent."
The teen nodded, "I know that Dad," he replied, "I have seen everyone do it. Why can't I?"
Simon chuckled, "Cos everyone's done it. I won't be surprised if Colin and Mike were stopped from joining." He knew his cousin and how much the three children he had meant the world to him.
"But Uncle Matt didn't stop Liam and Ry from joining." Trent was back on his feet.
"Like I said it was your uncle's call on this. They are stubborn like you, I'm sure Matt had the same conversation with them. And you still aren't going Military." And Simon debated to go and calm his wife down.

Many roads to take Some to joy, some to heart-ache Debra was furious. "You can't quit when you finish either!! Point is the answer is NO!" she fumed as she was heard slamming the door. Had Trent taken stupid pills. It took Debra a lot to get worked up. That was unless it involved family or the military then she was more like her sister than she cared to admit. Glancing at her cellphone her dad's number was pulled up. Still debating making the call. She knew the result would likely get her a lecture but she also knew her dad would help.
Was the lecture from Fred worth the phone call? Yes, it was. Yet, she wasn't sure if she wanted to make the call right now. It would be made but was now really the right time for that? She debated for texting him instead. At least then he would see it on his own time and she wouldn't be interrupting something important.
Debra curled up on the bed and stared at the wall. She wanted to much to protect her family, and the military worked against her every step of the way. Her brother in law and come home injured because of the military.

it's a sign of my obsession ||A wince was only matter of time as his wife stormed out of the room. Simon wasn’t sure what he could do to make her feel any better, “ You have managed to piss her to a level that was last done by your Uncle Bobby.” After that the man had broken up with Jamie in a worst possible way. Trent looked at his father with wide eyes, “ Uncle Bobby…” he trailed off, “ How?” Simon sighed, “ Long story,” he looked at his boy, “ now get out before she locks you in the room.” Then followed his wife, to their bedroom, slowly opening the door, he poked his head in, saw her in the position she was in, took baby steps inside, “ Sweetheart,” he sat on the edge of the bed and looked at her. It would be dumb of his to ask if she was okay, when he knew she wasn’t. “ You know my mother and Aunt Sarah reacted the same way when each one of us told two of them that we were heading off Military.” But they all ended up turning into fine Officers that their fathers could be proud off. Looking at her, “ I don’t know, how this is supposed to help, since you are clearly upset.” He leaned over and pecked her cheek. His son was headstrong and Simon didn’t doubt for one moment he the boy won’t have what it took to get into Navy and strive. However, Oxford was a heavy name with even more heavy history in Navy. Living up to that wasn’t easy as it sounded. [ 263 minus codes ] [ None] [ MUSIC ] [ @debbie ] you're my sweetest sin |

Many roads to take Some to joy, some to heart-ache
Her dad’s number was still highlighted on her phone which lay by her head. Debra spoke to her dad often, though not usually when she was this upset. It usually got her a lecture about being too worked up about things. So it just showed the lengths she was willing to go to keep Trent away from the Navy. She sighed, pulling political strings was easy. Debra had contacts all over, and she knew she wasn’t the only one.
The moment Simon sat down on the edge of the bed, Debra rolled over and put her head in his lap. “Hasn’t this family given enough service to the military?” She whispered. Debra had taken it hard when Simon had come home injured, he had gotten lucky. It hadn’t ended his career. Bobby wasn’t as lucky. Debra didn’t miss things like that.
“He seems to think if he doesn’t like it, he can change his mind.” Debra bit her lip. “I’m not even going to say what I am thinking because you already know he can’t turn back.” Debra took a few deep breaths. Debbie, unlike her sister, could direct her anger at specific people. Simon didn’t deserve her wrath and her husband could open her and read her like a book.
“I’m not upset with you. You don’t have to walk on eggshells.” She reminded him as she sat up a little and wrapped her arms around his neck. Burying her head she hugged him tight. “I just lost my mother. I cannot lose our son.” Trent had terrible timing with everything. He always had.

it's a sign of my obsession ||Her questioned was reasonable enough. The Oxford had given more than their share of serving the Armed Forces. Simon sighed as he looked at her, “ More than enough,” he admitted, “ We can trace the whole thing two hundred years back.” Most of the past Oxfords had been members of the Military, mostly British. And somewhere down the line US was added to the list. Even then, Oxfords had done more than their share as military men. But he understood where Trent was coming from. There was history of armed forces that one couldn’t avoid. The new generation always followed the old. But not all the time Military was kind. He combed his hand through her hair and chuckled, “ He knows it. That son of ours isn’t a fool. I think he is trying to push your buttons. Deb, he has been around Military Officers all his life.” Simon had to believe that his son knew what he was getting into. All the Oxford boys had entered with open mind and knowing what Military asked for. “ I have a sane brain to walk on an eggshell,” if she could see him, he would have wagged his finger, “ It won’t matter who you are mad at. There are high chances a wrong person will get bitten.” When she mentioned her mother, he exhaled. It wasn’t easy losing a mother, “ You won’t lose him. Not if I can help it.” Bobby or Matt were to best people to slap some sense into his boy, if that failed. Simon was calling the bigger guns; his father and Uncle. [ 264 minus codes ] [ Yay!! Many roads to take Some to joy, some to heart-ache
Debra didn’t want a history less on the Oxford military service. She already knew. It was hard to ignore it when it was a family tradition. Her father was military, her brother, her husband, her brother in laws. It was hard to turn a blind eye on everything it had given and taken from the family. Debra was slowly losing her family and she hated the feeling. There was no response to his comment about family tradition, anything she said would come out sharp and not intended for Simon. She knew he didn’t like when she spewed undeserved venom laced words in his direction.
Deb took a deep breath and tried to keep herself from panicking. “I can’t let him do this Simon.” She would have little choice when her son turned eighteen. There were still a few months there. “The military isn’t the same as it was when you got into it, when your brothers commissioned.” Debra put her hand down on the bed she was seated on and leaned into Simon playing with hair. He knew exactly how to calm her down. Though him laughing was grating on her nerves just a little; but she bit her tongue. He was trying to help.
Debra turned around and hugged Simon super close to her. He had this way of just fixing everything. Sometimes if Debra could just forget everything going through her head, she would settle down. Her family was going to give her a heart attack from all the worry she was going through.
